The manor of Bolam in County Durham was Robert Pursglove's largest gift to Guisborough Hospital. He bought the manor in 1561 for £346 14s. 2d., and we still have the purchase documents in our archive.

One of the most lucrative of the Bolam properties was the Leg of Mutton inn, now the Countryman (right).

Rentals from Bolam made a massive contribution towards the running costs of the almshouses and grammar school for over 350 years, until 1919. In that year Headmaster Rev. Berwick and the Governors sold the foundation's holdings in Bolam to fund new facilities at the school.

In our archive, we have a remarkable collection of documents relating to Bolam, from those early sales documents, to records of tenancies and legal disputes, to the Auction Brochure of 1919 which lists in detail the land owned.
