Francis Townsend was born in 1893 and attended Guisborough Grammar School for 3 months from September to December 1904.
During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant in the 5th Battallion, Durham Light Infantry. Francis died in France on 30 September 1916, aged 23, and is buried in Abbeville.
His name is recorded on the Grammar School’s War Honours Board — alongside the names of all of the Grammar School’s alumni to die in the First and Second World Wars.
