James Ableson was born on 18 March 1917, the son of William Ableson who died during WWI. James attended the School between September 1929 and July 1935.
During the Second World War, James served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in Burma. He died on 8 March 1942, aged 24, and is commemorated on The Rangoon Memorial which bears the names of almost 27,000 men who died during the campaigns in Burma (now Myanmar) and who have no known grave.
There is a memorial window to James in St Nicholas' Church, Guisborough and his name is also recorded on the Grammar School’s War Honours Board – alongside the names of all of the Grammar School’s alumni to die in the First and Second World Wars.
