Z67, Prince George planting a chestnut tree in the Master's garden of Guisborough Grammar School, 1933
On February 28 1933, Prince George made an official visit to Guisborough. He was greeted by Headmaster Mr Routh at the grammar school, and in the school hall he met local Social Service Centre officials.
The following comes from the school magazine, The Guisborian, and is their account of the prince's visit:
'He then proceeded to the Gymnasium to witness a physical training squad of unemployed men drilling, as they have been doing every week this winter. Mr Routh’s kindness in permitting this was fully rewarded when, after the inspection, the Prince kindly consented to plant a tree in the front garden. A crowd had already gathered along the railings on the Priory side of the School and witnessed the proceedings with great interest.
'The whole School had turned out quietly just before H.R.H’s descent from the Gymnasium, and as he returned through the arch and got into his car they all gave three lusty cheers, waved their caps, and the echo still ringing the royal car departed.
'The tree which commemorates Prince George’s visit is a sturdy chestnut sapling, and will be marked by a metal plaque, with a suitable inscription, to be made by the Belmont Forge.'
