Z57, Mr Routh (1931 - 1960)
Mr Routh was the first layman to be appointed as Headmaster of Guisborough Grammar School. Until his appointment, all of the Headmasters had been ordained clergymen.
His appointment was, therefore, the first to directly contravene Robert Pursglove's rule that only clergymen or unmarried laymen could be Masters of the school.
A fan of Gilbert and Sullivan, Mr Routh encouraged amateur dramatics at the school. He was also a lay reader at St Nicholas' Church in Guisborough.
